Thanks to a tip from Money Saving Maine-iac I was able to stock up on pumpkin at Reny's. Pumpkin muffins are a favorite with my kids, so I make them alot. The last time I went to Hannaford they had 1 can, the next time I went they hadn't restocked and the shelf was empty.

Reny's is a great place for organic snacks too.

So last week I did work some deals and even took pictures so I could do some posts, but do you see this beautiful girl above she required all my attention last week and I never had time to post them. She had a 2 dance performances last weekend, which meant Mom was at rehersal or transporting her to and from rehersal every night last week. Two weeks prior to the show I had her in the ER with a possible growth plate fracture, so to see her dance last weekend after being in pain, on crutches and an air-cast was so exciting. Love my baby girl.

So tonight I am planning my deals for Shaws (nothing like waiting for the last day). I think I might totally skip Rite Aid this week I wasnt really excited about it.

Extreme Couponing....NOT

I went to Shaws earlier in the week and was excited about these deals because I was low on all of these items. After coupons and a few dollars from my bottle return tickets I paid $2.35. Nothing too exciting, but I was happy with the purchase. There was a lady behind me in line and when she saw my very small stack of coupons and my total bill she said "here is some real extreme couponing in action". I just smiled, not sure how to respond to that comment. This is far from extreme.

After holiday clearance

Ok no promises, but I now have a computer that is working correctly, so I will TRY to start doing some more postings.....remember I said TRY.

So after holiday is one of my favorite time to hit the clearance racks....I purchased all of the items above for only $.90. I also love to pick up items that can be used for birthday goodie bags...like bubble stuff, pencils & stuff.

It is so tempting when you see the 50% clearance sales to stock up, but if you can be patient the store will usually end up marking them down to 75%-90% off.

Raking in the deals at Rite Aid

Rite Aid is one of my favorite shopping trips for 2 reasons:

Reason #1 -The cashiers at the store that I go to are some of the nicest cashiers I've ever had. Every week my transactions usually involve help from the manager and it can be frustrating for them I'm sure. They are so kind and patient. Not only are they nice but they make you feel good about yourself. When they get to the end of the transaction they figure out for me exactly what I saved and tell everyone standing around them how well I did.....too funny.

Reason #2 - they are always well stocked. It is one of the smaller stores so they dont always carry some of the food items, but rarely do I need a raincheck and always happy to substitute. You know how rite aid works and if they are out of one item it can mess up your whole transaction.

This week I scored some good deals - I dont have a picture since I've already put away and given stuff away - here is what I got:

2 Gain Dish Detergent

1 Libby Mand. Oranges

3 Swiss Miss Cocoa

1 Huggies little movers (gave to a friend)

After coupons I paid $3.96 and received $8 (I think it was $8 or around that) in UPS Rewards for my next trip

A lot of people have been asking me where I have gone...and why I'm not posting. Other than the reason of having a busy day to day life it's basically my computer. My laptop died and the computer I'm using is really slow. It takes forever to do posts. By the time I get my coupons printed I'm so frustrated I just quit.

Anyway.... I'm still here and still bringing in the savings.....hopefully I can get some work done on my computer and start some posting again.

Buying chicken in bulk

My friend just shared a trick with me that her mother in law taught her. I thought I would share it with you.

I buy my chicken in bulk when it's on sale and section it off in 4 pieces for my family and use my trusty food saver to seal it up good and stick it in the freezer. This works great except for when you need 5 pieces of chicken. An unexpected playdate or extra guest for dinner can throw things off a bit. So I have to either give away my piece of chicken or thaw out another package and then I have to figure out what to do with the other pieces that I really don't need.

This is the trick that I learned....

wrap each piece of chicken in either plastic wrap or wax paper (I used both just to make sure they didn't stick together)
then you can put them all in one freezer bag together and just take out only what you need

What a good idea - I wonder why I never thought of this.

A few weeks ago one of the girls at work brought in some muffins to share. By the time I noticed them there was only 2 left (I had skipped breakfast that day) I decided to just take a half a muffin. I took one bite and decided to go back and get the other half. I think it was one of the best muffins I've ever had. It could partially be because it was 9:30 and I hadn't eaten anything yet, but it was defiantly yummy. I have some baking in the oven right now.

By the way, she replaced the brown sugar topping with 'sugar in the raw' which I did as well. If you dont keep that on hand go to their website to get a coupon (it's a little expensive).

Suprising Food Find

I went shopping for a rug yesterday and thought I would try a local "Job Lot". I was looking for an inexpensive rug - as you can see below I found one and at 1/2 the price I was expecting.

I saw a food section in the store and thought I would check it out - I needed a few spices and things. So first I came across a wall of spices for $.88/each .....nice....I bought several.

I scanned thru cans of refried beans and canned peas in hopes that I would find something good. Then I thought I hit the jackpot - a whole wall full of organic foods. I've been trying to buy more organic, natural, whole grain or at least foods without unnecessary junk added to them but they are expensive (even when on sale and with a coupon). The other day I priced some pancake mix ($7.99) - I found a similar brand here for $2.50. Not to mention the pretzels, rolled oats, noodles and don't forget the cookies. Have you tried these Newman's Ginger cookies - ok they are not the healthiest thing but I don't buy packaged cookies very often and WOW are these good.

At the end of the shopping I'm not sure if I was happier about the rug or the food. Sometimes you find the best deals when you least expect them.

My Coupons are in Italy

I posted a while ago about sending expired coupons to our military families oversees. I choose Italy as my choice of destination. For 2 reasons: I have an absolutely fabulous Italian friend and I've always wanted to go there. So if I cant make it there perhaps my coupons will. I included a note and my email address so that if they no longer accept them they could let me know so that I could send them elsewhere.

I've sent out at least 4 big envelopes so far, but heard nothing....until tonight. I got a very nice email from a lady in Sicily that said thank you and she is sorting them out as we speak.

I will no longer have tears in my eyes when I have expired coupons to clean out of my binder.

PS. For those of you not familiar with how it works - There is an FPO address that you send it to (that is in the States) and they forward to your point of destination from there. So you just pay regular postage.

I did something today that I haven't done in over 2 years - I paid full price (no coupon) for a box of cereal and I bought it at Shaws no less. Why did I do this ??? My adorable 4 year old niece is staying with us and I let her pick what we were going to have for dinner and breakfast.

I asked her if she could have anything she wanted for breakfast what would it be??? It took her about 1/2 a second to answer "Lucky Charms and Raspberries" so off to the store I went.

My kids are picky about cereal - my daughter prefers Cheerios and my son likes Granola - who can argue with that ? There are a couple of sugar cereals that they like and I will occasionally purchase but it is usually as a weekend treat and I stick with the healthier choices on school mornings.

Here is how it went .....

One box of Lucky Charms $3.99

2 packages of raspberries $2.88/each

The look on my niece and my son's face when they saw what I got them for a treat............PRICELESS

I also picked up 2 packages of "silly bands" for her - she sat on the couch forever sorting them out and putting them on and off- well worth the $2.00 I paid for them.

Funny thing happened to me in the grocery store the other day................

I was shopping at Hannaford and purchase maybe 12 items or so and used 3-4 coupons and some of them were for the Clorox Green Works Detergent (with the troublesome beeping coupon). I explained to the cashier (young male) how the coupon needed to be rung in so that it would go thru properly. So after he rang it in he said " You know, I saw on 20/20 where "some lady" got a whole cart load of groceries for like $1.50.....have you ever heard of anything like that?"

I thought about going into a long drawn out answer and explain what I do and how I do it, but since he was a young kid who probably could care less what I do and I didn't want to come across as the crazy coupon lady. So I just answered a simple "yes, I have".

When I explain to people what I do with couponing and the money I save - I get one of the following reactions

"you need a hobby"

"wow, that is awesome - teach me how"

once I even got a "yeah right" - like I was making it up (just so you know I keep my receipts for proof )

So since I never know what response I'll get I often keep my mouth shut about it.

I was looking forward to planning my Shaws list cause I've heard some good stuff about the sales- so I finally got a chance to sit down and plan my list and now I'm disappointed. I did find a few things, but passed on alot of it.

I think I am gonna skip the $10 coupon when purchase 10 participating items - I really do not need 10 boxes of poptarts or keebler cookies in my house. I did think about the nutri grain bars but I'm the only one that likes them and I really do not want to eat 10 boxes of them.

Hood Ice Cream/frozen yogurt 2/$5 I have $1.00 off coupon for the frozen yogurt

Dynamo Detergent BOG2F - I have several $1 off 2 coupons - haven't decided if I'm gonna get this or not - it's a great deal but I will have to share my reason later

That's basically it - I have a $8 off $80 coupon so if I have non-sale items that I need to purchase this week I may get them at Shaws this week instead of making my normal Hannaford trip - I will wait and see how much energy I have on my late night shopping trip.

Using Clorox Coupon @ Hannaford

A few weeks ago I posted a Clorox Green Works Coupon for $3.00 - Hannaford has had this on sale for $2.99 for the last couple weeks - I was finally able to pick up a bottle - the shelves have been bare. The coupon will beep and depending on the cashier they have trouble ringing it in. The cashier had to call the manager over to help her and since this was my only purchase I almost just said forget it cause there was a big line behind me. Both the cashier and manager were extremely patient and nice - so I just waited.

Knowing the Hannaford's coupon policy I told them that it was probably because the amount of the coupon exceeded the amount of the product - they tried 12 times to put the coupon in for $3.00 - once they tried what I suggested and enter the coupon for $2.99 it worked. So in case you have the same issue I thought I would share this with you, maybe it will save you some time and the cashier some frustration.

I had to pay tax (of course) but paying $.15 for a bottle of laundry detergent is a great deal - I really like the stuff too - works great !

It's that time of the month again -- time to clean out all those expired coupons. When I clean out my binder I feel like I'm throwing money in the trash. No more.....I'm sending them overseas to be used by our military families. Pick a branch of the military and a base and put them in an envelope and hopefully they will go to good use. I have family in the military and what they sacrifice for the freedom of our country is amazing. It's not just the soldiers that have it hard, but also the spouses and children left behind. If this is something that I can do to help than I will do it. You do not have to pay out of the country shipping - just send it to the FPO address and post it with regular postage.

A couple of good things going on at Shaws this week - As soon as I plan my list I will post it, but until then I thought I would share this with you in case you haven't already seen it.

If you received a flyer in the mail you would of received 4 double your $1 coupons attached - these are typically only in the flyers you receive in the mail not the ones that you can pick up in the store (learned that the hard way).

"Present these coupons and we will double up to 4 manufacturers coupons that have a value of $1 and with purchase of $15 or more. ...not to exceed the value of the item....after all other valid coupons redemption and rewards discount.....excludes coupons that state they cant be doubled or tripled."

Got Milk???? A couple of milk deals at Shaws......Valid 7/30-8/5 Free Gallon of milk on your next shopping trip when you buy 3 participating General mills cereal. If you have a $.75 coupon for Kix this would make a really good deal - you could get 3 boxes of Kix and a gallon of milk (up to $3.75 value) and pay only $1.50. Or you could use some of the $1.00 off 2 coupons and use one of the $1.00 doubling Shaws coupons this week .

The other milk deal is (7/30-9/16) Buy 6 gallons of milk with your shaws card and get the 7th for free)

Crystal Light - this is a weekly must for my hubby (on sale or not) I didnt realize the larger containers were on sale but they were reg price $4.99 - on sale $3.99 $.50 coupon (doubled) $3.49 each (similar to regular price at Hannaford)
Poland Spring Water - $3.49 = FREE with purchase of Crystal Light
Quaker Granola Bars $2.99 on sale BOGOF - use $1.00 off one coupon = $1.00/box (I had 8 coupons so I bought 8 boxes)
Prego Speg Sauce - I wasnt sure how this sale would work out since regular price on this is still high but it worked out well $2.29 reg price on sale BOGOF $.50/2 coupon (which doubled) = $.65/each

I havent looked yet but I am hoping that the sales at Shaws are better next week so I can do some stockpiling - I ended up going to Hannaford after this trip and spending $75.00 - my friend was with me and she said "Wow, I dont think I've ever seen you pay this much for groceries". Oh well, better luck next week.

I've been taking a little bit of a break from "stockpile shopping" unfortunately that means I have to end up paying full price for things....bummer.

You may have noticed that I have not been posting my sales from Rite Aid - to be honest I've decided to pass on deals at Rite Aid for the summer. During the summer I do most of my grocery shopping in the evenings. The Rite Aid that I go to is not near the grocery store so it would require a special trip. Summer is so short and there are so many fun things to do that I would prefer not to spend the extra time planning and shopping. There are a couple of deals at Shaw this week that I haven't been able to get yet and I'm really hoping not to miss them. My plan was to go after work tonight, but I forgot my list and coupons and if I don't take my coupons what's the point of going. So then I was gonna go after I put the kids to bed...but that didn't happen. I am sitting here at 9:30pm thinking - I could still go they don't close until 11PM. Since I live 20 min away from town I talked myself out of it and told myself - maybe I will get there tomorrow.

Anyway...my point was....there are a few good deals and there is still time to get them.

This is what's on my list:

Raspberries or Strawberries 2/$4 (depending on how they look)
Seedless Cukes BOGOF
Shaws Drumsticks $.88/lb - not my favorite thing but works great for making soup
DiLuigi Marinated Steak Tips $5.99/lb - I will use my $1.00 Shaws coupon from this week

This weekend was my son's 6th birthday party. I thought I would share a couple of my birthday party money saving tips.

I collect most of my party favors all year long and keep them in a box. After every holiday I hit the clearance racks and see what I can use for future parties. There were bubbled & crayons after halloween and yo-yo's after valentine's day plus more that can be used for birthdays. Most of the stuff that I pick up is 75% off.

Make your own cake is a big money saver. I have to confess that my sister has made most of the birthday cakes for my kids. She is very talented at this sort of thing and I ...well....not so much.

Make your own pinata - this isnt a very good picture but I spray painted a box and cut shapes out of wrapping paper - cut up some of the plates to decorate.

I also mix and match the plates and cups. I will buy a couple packages of the theme plates and mix those with matching solid color plates and napkins that can be picked up for $1 - these can also sometimes be picked up on an after holiday clearance.

End result - a very happy 6 year old. The money you can save on these little things you can use on that much desired gift !!!

Grilling Time

Inspired by the grilled peaches that I posted the other day, I thought that I would share one of our family favorite all grilled meals. It's a simple, no brain, no clean up meal.

Red Potatoes with butter, salt, pepper, garlic powder and oregano - Cover with aluminum foil
Green Beans with butter, salt, pepper and sometime I add some garlic powder to those as well - cover with aluminum foil

Put them all on the grill with your meat of choice - this night we decided to do steak tips

Make sure to stir around the potatoes and green beans so that they don't burn.

The end result -- yum yum

My favorite part of the meal --- no clean up.

Tonight not only did we grill all our food - we ate on paper plates on the front deck and enjoyed the view- so there was no kitchen clean up

This time of year the grill is my stove/oven. If it can be cooked on the grill we grill it. Meat/potatoes/green beans/corn on the cob, just to name a few.....all on the grill. For more than one reason this caught my eye to see peaches cooked on the grill - reason #1 was because they can be grilled, reason#2 was an idea for a healthier dessert idea and reason#3 use those peaches that are starting to go bad. By the way did you know that you can use your rebate check to pay for your order??? I had my rebate check clipped on my bag so that I didn't forget to go to the bank and the cashier saw it and asked if I wanted to use it to pay for my order. Great - saved me a trip to the bank !

Hubby and I went to LLBean Outlet last weekend. He went to the fishing section and I headed straight for the kids clearance racks. There was one small rack, but everything on it was $.99.....I kid you not !!! Lots of little girl and little boy bathing suits but most of them would not fit my kids.

I thought I had it figured out to come to $0 or better, but I think I messed it up a little. The diapers ended up being $1.99 - I dont have kids in diapers but I have a niece that I can give them to.

UPDATE: I got my Rite Aid Rebate amount and it was more than I thought receving $14.49 - so in the end I will pay $2.57

Summer is here and if your kids are like mine they love Popsicles. My kids love the all fruit Eddy's pops, but I can not always get the flavor that they want and if I don't have a coupon or if they are not on sale they are expensive. Last night I was planning my grocery list and logged onto Shaws.com to preview the sales, since the flyer hadn't come out yet. I saw that there were 4 coupons that would double your $1.00 manufacturer coupon. I was so excited !!!!! Since I didn't have a flyer I thought that I would just pick one up at the store. To my disappointment there were not any of the double your $1.00 coupon print outs in the flyer. I thought that perhaps it was regional and Maine didn't get them. I was going to ask at the service desk, but there was a line and I didn't want to be late picking up my son from school. So I decided to just try to get over the fact that I missed out on that deal.

I took my sad self to the check out and there I heard the store manager and the cashier talking about how to ring in these coupons that they had never seen before. It caught my attention and I stopped what I was doing and asked the lady in front of me where she got them and told her my disappointing story. I must of made it sound devastating cause she pulled out 2 that she hadn't used and gave them to me.....so very nice.

I later found out that these are only in the flyers that are sent in the mail - not the ones at the store. So make sure to take them with you.

I agree with some, but not all of the article. If you are new at stock piling I would suggest to start slow and figure out who much you really an consume. When I first started I did end up throwing away some cereal, but now I know how much we can consume so I can stock up when there is a sale. I also stock up on paper towels, toilet paper and stock my freezer with meat. I have room to store my paper towels and t-paper and no one had to sacrifice their closet or give away toys to make room for them.

My Motivation Is Back !!!!

Peter Pan peanut butter (my favorite) reg price $2.79 - on sale for 2 for $3.00 I had several $1.00 off 2 coupons and picked them up for $1.00 each...great price

Wise Popcorn (my kids love to have this in their lunch boxes) After sale and coupon I paid $1.00/bag

Synder Pretzels Regular price $2.99/each - they were on sale for $2.49 - they let me use 3 coupons for this. I had 2 $1.00 off 1 coupons and picked up the pretzels for $1.49. Then I had a buy 2 bags of pretzels and get $2.00 off 2 liters of Sprite. The Sprite was on sale for $1.00 so I got the Sprite for free. I would normally pass on the soda just because I dont really want it in the house, but having company this weekend I think it will come in handy.

Dole Pineapple reg price $3.29 on sale for $1.99 used $.75 coupon which doubled and picked this up for $.50. this was a great find and will work great for smoothies. I think I found the coupon in a magazine - I'm thinking it was in "All You"

I did all my grocery shopping at Shaws this week and I spent a little more than I usually would but I was able to stock up so I am ok with it. There are alot of other things that are on sale that are worth picking up. Like....Strawberries $1.69, Chicken $1.99, Potatoes $1.49 (5lbs), Ball Park Franks are BOGOF and if you have the $.75 coupons you can pick them up cheap (they freeze well so even if you are not a hot dog eating family - summer is just around the corner and you never know when you may be the one to be asked to bring Hot Dogs to a B-Q )

I didnt include my veggies, milk, sandwich meat, chicken, yogurt and many other items in this picture just because I needed to get them in the fridge and some of the other stuff was just not all that exciting....but my total for all my groceries the week was
